Teen Summer Camp
Which one of our teen summer camps would you choose?
With several program groups, Sail Caribbean teen summer camps have been a popular selection for parents and teens alike. The best part of signing up is deciding which program you want to go on! Here’s a brief outline of a few past highlights and happenings in each of the different program groups.
Alpha
Just twelve days in length, Alpha sessions are really fast-paced. But students haven’t missed a thing because these teen summer camps make sure to hit the very best locations in the British Virgin Islands. Parents and teens have frequently chosen Alpha when there’s a tight summer schedule with a small window for BIG adventure.
Bravo
From learning to sail lasers to sunset sailing with dolphins alongside the boats, the Bravo team experience is nothing short of excellent. Some of the accomplishments of past summers at these teen summer camps include numerous American Red Cross Lifeguard Certifications, American Sailing Association Basic Keelboat Certifications, and a record number of marine biology seminar attendees. In addition to mastering the sailing curriculum, days have been filled with showing off wakeboarding and waterskiing skills to the fleet.
Charlie
Every season our Charlie students dive, dive and dive again to a record number of PADI scuba certifications. Sail Caribbean Divers provides every certification and Specialty from Open Water all the way through to professional Open Water Dive Instructor. Sail Caribbean Divers even offers PADI distinct specialties like RMS Rhone Diver. This amazing course, offered only by Sail Caribbean Divers teen summer camps, is designed around the famous shipwreck that sank over 140 years ago.
Delta
Delta students have come away with unprecedented numbers of Crew and Bosun certifications. Several students have also achieved the Mate level certification, our highest ranking. As part of our Leave No Trace curriculum, crews have held “Green Challenge Day”. This day puts their skills to the test. They were asked to conserve water for 18 hours, forgo the use of their dinghy engines, and sail on and off mooring balls to conserve fuel. Overall the days at Delta teen summer camps were filled with laughter and learning.
Echo
Echo sessions have grown in popularity faster than many other teen summer camps. We’ve increased the number of boats and the number of programs to accommodate demand for this college leadership program. Echo students have proven that they can become wonderful role models and mentors. They’ve learned from each other’s teaching styles and gained experience in Outdoor Adventure Education for which credit has been granted through Prescott College.
Foxtrot
Foxtrot students have really made a difference through environmental community service in the British Virgin Islands. Students throughout the years have been enthusiastic in their conservation efforts to protect the surrounding fragile ecosystem. Many students at Foxtrot teen summer camps opt to become certified scuba divers to better appreciate the marine world by exploring deeper than snorkeling will allow.
Sierra
Sierra sessions have proven that serious marine studies can be fun too. Whether performing underwater reef surveys for Coral Watch and Project REEF, or tagging sea turtles, Sierra students were involved and thorough in every research task accomplished. Most teen summer camps don’t have the opportunity to capture, tag and release endangered sea turtle, but Sail Caribbean’s Sierra program does. After measuring one turtle that our students caught two years in a row, they found it had grown a whole 8 centimeters! This shows our monitoring efforts are successful long term since scientists use this information to track turtle age and population density.
Tango
Since 2007, our students have partnered with local BVI kids from the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP). As a team they’ve accomplished amazing things for the community at our teen summer camps. They made a difference by mapping beach erosion and testing water samples for Sandwatch along with other environmental service projects. YEP families shared some of their local cuisine, giving us a true taste of Tortolan culture. These have been mutually beneficial exchanges for all involved and will continue for years to come.
